Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

Personalized blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy uses a specialized tourniquet system, similar to a blood pressure cuff, to temporarily and intermittently reduce blood flow to a targeted area during exercise. This tricks the muscles into responding as if performing hard exercise, allowing patients to train at low loads (20-35% of effort) while gaining strength and hypertrophy responses. It accelerates the healing process after injury or surgery without excessive strain on the affected area.

The Payoff

How it helps

  • Accelerated recovery after injury, surgery, or medical procedures
  • Strength and muscle growth (hypertrophy) with lighter loads
  • Restored mobility and symmetry
  • Increased growth hormone and muscle protein production
  • Less strain on injured or surgical areas

Build strength without heavy loading

Blood flow restriction training uses a medical-grade pneumatic cuff to partially restrict venous return from a working limb while you exercise with very light weight. The restricted environment creates the metabolic stress of heavy lifting at a fraction of the mechanical load — allowing you to build muscle and strength when injury, surgery, or pain makes heavy loading impossible.

This matters most early in rehab. After surgery or injury, muscle atrophies fast, and traditionally you couldn't load heavy enough to stop it. BFR lets us start rebuilding strength weeks earlier, using loads a healing joint or tendon can tolerate.

Is it safe?

BFR has a strong safety record in the research literature when applied by trained clinicians with proper equipment and individualized pressures — which is exactly how we use it. Your therapist screens for contraindications, sets cuff pressure to your limb and vitals, and supervises every set. It's a staple of our post-operative ACL, knee, and shoulder rehab, and a favorite of our athlete patients who want to hold onto strength through an injury.
