IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)

IASTM is a manual form of physical therapy in which therapists use specialized metal or plastic tools to gently scrape and move the skin to reduce pain and inflammation and promote healing. The instruments help therapists find and treat affected areas more accurately, effectively removing scar tissue and connective tissue restrictions. A mild inflammatory response is triggered to support the body's natural healing and functional restoration.

The Payoff

How it helps

  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Breakdown of scar tissue and adhesions
  • More accurate detection and treatment of affected areas
  • Improved motion and motor control
  • Faster recovery and functional restoration

Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization

IASTM uses precisely shaped instruments to detect and treat restrictions in muscle and fascia. The tools let a trained clinician feel texture changes that fingertips miss and deliver targeted mechanical stimulus to scarred, densified, or chronically overloaded tissue. That stimulus triggers a localized healing response — increased blood flow and fibroblast activity — that helps disorganized tissue remodel.

It's especially useful for chronic tendon problems (Achilles, patellar, elbow), post-surgical scar tissue, and long-standing muscle tightness that returns no matter how much you stretch.

What to expect

Treatment feels like firm, specific pressure with occasional gritty sensations over restricted spots. Mild redness and next-day tenderness are normal. IASTM sessions at Limitless are always combined with loading exercise — remodeling tissue requires both the stimulus and the progressive load that tells the new tissue how to organize.
